left behind

April 2017 / body of work

left behind • explores the relationship that my widowed grandma has with the memory of her husband. Even months after losing her husband she has not overcome the loss, and mentally, she still has a strong bond with the memory of him.

In order to create Left Behind, I had spent a week with my grandmother helping her with the routines she had to complete in preparation for the Greek Easter. It is a tradition to spend the week prior Easter with the immediate family, baking pastries and dyeing Easter eggs. This is a tradition that my grandfather was a big part of, being the person that would make sure everything was moving smoothly.

My grandma is still in the process of accepting the loss, as she is coming to realisation and acceptance of living on her own – in company of her middle aged deaf son which still to this day she is taking care of.

This body of work was exhibited at Mutual Bond - EXPOSURE PHOTO FESTIVAL in March 2018.
